Legal basis, conduct and register of interests

Legal basis for the governing body

The Instrument of Government is the legal document which sets out the composition of our governing body. As well as the categories of governors it mentions, we can also appoint associate members to the governing body. They provide really valuable skills and expertise, and as such we have chosen to give them voting rights where they sit on our committees. We publish details of our governing body membership including everyone currently on our governing body and those who have served within the last 12 months.

Standards of conduct

We decided to introduce our Code of Conduct which ensures governors and associate members have a shared understanding of and commitment to the very highest standards of conduct. Each year we restate our commitment to the Code of Conduct at our autumn Full Governing Body meeting.

Avoiding and managing conflicts of interest

Governors are required to act in the best interests of the school at all times and consequently any other loyalties must be put aside. All governors and associate members are asked to complete a declaration of interest form when they first take office and at the start of every school year.

All members of the governing body are also reminded of their duty to declare any interests in relation to particular agenda items at the start of each meeting. Where they do have an interest they must leave the meeting during discussion of the relevant item and are not allowed to vote.
