I have been Chair of Governors since 2018, having previously been Chair of the Finance and Premises Committee. My Vice Chair is Caroline Storey, a former parent at both schools who brings a great deal of industry experience to chairing our Pay and Personnel Committee.
In addition our committee chairs Jerry Appleyard (Finance and Premises) and Barbara Clifford (Achievement and Families) provide valuable support and expertise in their specific roles, ably backed by other governors from a variety of different backgrounds – we are a mix of governors, elected by parents, elected by staff, proposed by the Local Education Authority and co-opted from the federation’s community, serving along with the headteachers of both schools.
I have been involved in what is now the Federation since 2001, and have seen how the two schools have evolved separately over that time, and then subsequently as a Federation since 2014. They both retain their own character and history, and that of their specific buildings, but we are moving ever closer together both as a community and as providers of a seven year curriculum.
My fellow governors and I know that it is and has been a tough time in primary education, with new assessment regimes, revised SATs and ever toughening budgets. However, both schools in our Federation continue to meet those challenges.
Despite the challenges we have seen improvements across the Federation. Transition across all year groups is much better, and performance management is strong with collaborative and consistent assessment across the Federation. The work to deliver the seven year curriculum has been significant and I believe appreciated by the parents/carers. We also reviewed the challenge of closing the gap for our Pupil Premium Grant children, and continue to work on our increasingly tight budgetary targets.
The schools are led by the two headteachers (Alan Went and Zoe Brittain) and supported by two deputy headteachers (Mandy Appleyard at Hampton Hill Junior School and Dave Wells at Carlisle Infant School).
I am an Investment Management professional, am married to a teacher and have three children – one who has moved on to secondary school after attending both Carlisle Infants and Hampton Hill Junior School and two who are current pupils at HHJS.
